Reflection of EDU6115

After completing this course I feel I have gained and deepened my knowledge about learning greatly.  My foundation of understanding of how people learn and the ability to identify what learning style they lean towards and the learning theory that will most greatly aid the learner has become much more firm.  One of the most influential or striking concepts I have come to learn is that even though individuals may have greater tendencies to learn most readily from a particular learning style it is important not to isolate that learn from other learning styles.  As mentioned in the vast amount of resources covered in this course a individual learner’s learning style may vary depending on the content and information being presented.  In the past I think I had a greater tendency to identify one particular learning style a student may gravitate to and continually present information in predominantly in a particular way to that student.  After completing this course I will now be much more cognitive of not isolating a student to a particular learning style when presenting new or different content.

My understanding of my own personal learning style has also deepened.  I do feel that for me personally real world application and being able to draw on experiences from other areas of life have also greatly enhanced my own learning.  Before taking this course I was unaware of adult learning theory.  The idea that adult learners can and should use a variety of settings and opportunities to learn and not one source is something I felt I have done in my life now for a while. Being able to gain perspective from a variety of revered scholars on the subject has allowed me to have a greater awareness of my own learning and when it is or is not “going well”.

An additional point to adult learning that I think is equally important to make considering I work in the educational field is my relationship and ability to relate information to parents and legal guardians of the students I teach.  Before when explaining concepts or rational for projects in class or related to students I feel I used a more traditional approach to relate this information.  After this course the information I relate to parents or legal guardians will be done with consideration to this learning theory.

Adult learning theory and adapting learning styles for learners as content changes are not the only two benefits I gained from this course.  Considering all the learning theories covered (Behaviorist, Cognitive, Constructive, Social, Connectivism, and Adult Learning) and the exponential growth of technology and communication can seem a bit overwhelming when attempting to identify the best possible presentation of information for the learning audience.  Having the learning theory matrix as a reference tool to identify the appropriate learning theory to apply for the technology being used will help increase the effectiveness of the information being presented.

In my instructional design five questions I intend to carry with me while creating or editing instruction are the five "definitive questions" posed by Ertmer and Newby. By answering these questions when developing instruction it will be much easier to choose the best learning theory and then apply it to the information being presented.  I know that with my new found knowledge my ability to accurately plan has already improved.  Along with improving my ability to plan I feel Keller’s ARCS model serves as a great tool in informal assessment to identify where learners are at.  The attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction that the learners are receiving during the learning process is again something that I will be much more aware of now after completing this course than I ever was before.
Now equipped with the knowledge, information, and resources I have developed while taking this course I know my ability to design instruction has improved and so has my appreciation and understanding of the learning process.

Review of Learning about Learning Theory

After completing the learning theory matrix and the majority of this course I have developed a much deeper understanding of how learning occurs for me and others as well. After reviewing the six different learning theories the amount of overlapping ideas and concepts was very interesting. After learning about each learning theory I have come to the conclusion that I don't believe anyone theory is 100% correct or 100% wrong. It seems that all learning the theories that were discussed in this course can be applied to specific learners and situations to allow for optimal learning.

Personally I find my learning to vary from style to style depending upon a few different factors. One of these factors is immediate application of knowledge or information obtained. Basically the more relevant and immediate I perceive the benefit to obtaining the information to be the more focus I am on the learning process. Another observation I discovered about myself is the less basic knowledge I have on a given topic the more likely I am to revert to a behaviorist approach to learning. I find myself looking for cues, mimicking behaviors of other people I view as encountering similar situations successfully. Lastly, because I am an adult I feel that when I learn at the current state in my life this particular learning theory is constantly ongoing and developing through the overwhelming majority of my life, both formally and informally.

As the communication technologies constantly improve so do the possibilities for learning.  Growing and enhancing my learning network as described in social learning theory, constructivist learning theory, and connectivist learning theory will allow for a richer learning environment.
This course has been a great benefit in improving my own ability to learn.  I can now more readily understand which theory will be most beneficial to what content I am learning about.  Additionally this will prove to be a great aid in my development of curriculum for future students I will have.

Reflection on Mind Map

As a person’s network grows and develops so does his/her ability to learn at a more rapid and successful rate. As Tony Robbins says, “Life is not about resources it’s about resourcefulness.”  As a person’s network grows so does their resourcefulness, and their ability to learn and master new concepts.  The digital tool I find myself relying on most often on are digital videos.  Being able to rewind and repeat the presentation of the information allows me to focus on key concepts and immediately review parts of a presentation I may have difficulty learning the first time around.  Although watching web videos does provided a great amount of information there are still question that I may have.  Typically I attempt to look for a trusted source of information within the area or field I would have a question about.  It varies as much as asking friends and family for guidance, to sending an email to a union representative asking a question about our teaching contract, and including asking a student if something makes sense to them.  I believe my personal mind mapping strongly supports the central tenets of Connectivism.  There are many different areas of my life that overlap and so do the manner in which I learn in these different environments.  It would be illogical to only use a small fraction of my life experiences to solve a problem or find an answer any question I may have.   The more resourceful and information I can receive prior to making a decision or committing to an action the better my decision or action will be.

Week Two Assignment

Review Source 1

http://faculty.clintoncc.suny.edu/faculty/learningstyles/learningstyles.html

The Blog itself is limited in visual appearance or widgets but does not lack content and pertinent information about learning styles. The amount of resources and links listed at the bottom of the page shows the extent of knowledge that the author used to create this blog.

As for content this blog directly relates to points that  Dr. Orman stated in this weeks resources this website makes a distinction amongst learning styles in how the information is encoded.  However instead of using the term encoded this blog uses the term perception. There are basically four different ways people perceive their reality in terms of learning.  This blog also discusses how people choose to make sense of the information they have perceived in their reality to be important.

The links at the top of the page provide a great bullet-ed list of what strengths and weakness each learning style has.  After reviewing this website I am contemplating having my students next year review this site and try to determine what type of learner they are for themselves.

I found this blog overall to provided a large amount of accurate and applicable information while not getting too wordy or distracting.

Unlike the first blog that I visited this one seemed a bit over whelming.  The amount of hyperlinks provided my mind with too many distraction to initially find a direction and course of action to follow.  After Spending sometime on this site i found the amount of information to be impressive and the amount of additional resources to be as well.

Once I had explored enough links to satisfy my initial curiosity I settled in on a page dedicated to Design process.  One of the courses I teach is titled Design and Drawing for Production.  We spend a considerable amount of time discussions do modeling through the design process.  AS I am sure you are all aware there are several different design process models.  Naturally I was curious what advantages this one had to offer. This model is a shorter sequence of steps and nearly as accurate in its wording as the current model I am using.  Needless to say I will strongly consider this method for the upcoming year as well as researching it a bit more.  If I do end up using this method the amount of rehearsal learning the students will have to do in remembering all the steps in the design process will be greatly reduced.  I just need to assess if the trade off in accuracy is worth the gain in application.

Week One Assignment

This week in class we were instructed to find and review different professional blogs and resources relevant to content related to our individual work as instructional design professionals. Being a technology education teacher three blogs sites that I have researched in the past are related to the field of education.

1) http://blog.ted.com/
This is blog is part of a professional community that is committed to sharing "Ideas Worth Spreading" (http://www.ted.com/pages/about) These blogs are posts from people in the on the cutting edge of their field. The three fields that TED is concerned with are Technology, Entertainment, and Design.

2) http://www.foreverblender.com/
The website listed above is a blog created to aid in developing skills using the video and interactive software called blender. This program is a free download and provides a tremendous amount of opportunity for students to gain skills in video game and multimedia manipulation.

This last blog is a blog created by a teacher, Scott Snyder, and the process he has and continues to go through in taking his class from the 20th century to the 21st century.
